Step Drill Bits: Types, Uses & How to Choose the Right One
The step drill bit — sometimes called a unibit — is one of those tools that looks unusual until you have used one, and then you wonder how you ever drilled sheet metal without it. Instead of swapping through six twist bits to chase a wiring grommet from 1/4 inch up to 7/8 inch, you load a single step bit and walk it up to size in one pass. For electrical contractors, HVAC installers, sheet metal fabricators, and maintenance crews, that is a meaningful time savings on every panel and enclosure job.

What Is a Step Drill Bit?
A step drill bit is a conical, multi-diameter cutting tool ground with a series of stepped cutting edges, each producing a progressively larger hole as the bit advances. A typical 12-step bit might start at 3/16 inch and step up through eighths to 7/8 inch in a single bit body. As the operator feeds the bit into thin material, each step cuts a clean, deburred hole at its rated diameter, and any depth indicator (often laser-etched on the bit) tells the operator when to stop.
The geometry is the whole appeal. A twist drill loses control the instant the cutting edges punch through thin gauge metal — it grabs, tears, and produces an out-of-round triangular hole that is the bane of every electrician trying to pass a connector through it. A step bit does not do that, because at any given moment the cutting edges sit perpendicular to the workpiece and only one diameter is engaged at a time.
Construction and Coatings
Step bits are typically machined from high-speed steel (HSS) or solid cobalt, then finished with a surface treatment that affects friction, heat tolerance, and bit life:
- Black oxide — basic finish. Reduces friction modestly. Good for occasional drilling in mild steel and plastics.
- Titanium nitride (TiN) — the gold-colored coating most people picture. Lowers cutting temperatures and extends bit life by roughly 2–3x over black oxide for general-purpose work.
- Cobalt (M35 or M42) — alloyed throughout the bit, not just on the surface. Holds an edge at much higher temperatures, which is what stainless steel demands. Cobalt step bits typically last several times longer than coated HSS in tough materials.
- Aluminum titanium nitride (AlTiN) — premium dark-gray coating used on impact-rated bits. Better heat resistance than TiN.
Shank Types
Step bits come with a few common shank styles. 1/4 inch hex shanks lock into impact drivers and quick-change chucks for fast bit swaps. 3/8 inch hex shanks resist spin-out in heavier drills. Round shanks are standard for drill presses and three-jaw chucks. Match the shank to the driver — running an impact-rated bit in a standard drill is fine; running a non-impact-rated bit in an impact driver is how shanks shear.
What Is a Step Drill Bit Used For?
Step drill bits are purpose-built for thin material — typically sheet stock up to about 1/4 inch thick, though heavier-duty cobalt bits can push that further. Common industrial applications include:
- Drilling knockouts in steel enclosures, junction boxes, and panel cabinets
- Cutting access holes for cord grips, conduit connectors, and cable glands
- Field-modifying sheet metal HVAC ductwork
- Drilling holes in automotive and trailer sheet metal for accessories and grommets
- Enlarging existing holes to the next standard size without re-centering
- Drilling clean holes in plastic, fiberglass, aluminum, and copper sheet
- Light fabrication where a hole saw is overkill but a twist bit is too sloppy
- Producing pilot holes for self-tapping screws in thin sheet metal
Step bits are not intended for thick steel plate, structural members, or cast material. How to Choose a Step Drill Bit
Picking the right bit comes down to four decisions:
1. Size Range
Match the bit’s diameter range to the holes you cut most often. A bit that steps from 3/16 inch to 1/2 inch covers most electrical knockout and grommet work. A bit that goes up to 7/8 inch handles larger conduit connectors and switch boxes. For 1 inch and above, look at 1-1/8 inch or 1-3/8 inch capacity bits. Carrying two complementary bits often beats one oversized do-everything bit, which can be hard to control in smaller diameters.
2. Material and Coating
For occasional drilling in mild steel and plastic, a TiN-coated HSS bit is plenty and easy on the budget. For frequent drilling in stainless, hardened steel, or thicker gauge work, step up to cobalt. 3. Flute Design
Most quality step bits use either a single straight flute or a double spiral flute. Spiral flutes pull the bit through the material faster, but straight flutes generally produce a cleaner finish on softer materials. Most electricians prefer double-flute spiral designs for everyday work because they self-feed and clear chips well.
4. Shank Style

Step Drill Bit FAQs
Step bits are designed for sheet stock — generally 1/4 inch or thinner. Quality cobalt step bits can handle slightly thicker material, but the geometry of a stepped bit means only the cutting edges at one diameter are engaged at a time. For plate work past 1/4 inch, switch to an annular cutter on a magnetic drill press, or step up through a series of twist bits.
For mild steel and aluminum, light cutting oil extends bit life and produces a cleaner hole, but it is not strictly required. For stainless steel and hardened material, cutting fluid is non-negotiable — running dry will glaze the cutting edges and shorten a cobalt bit dramatically. A few drops of dark sulfurized cutting oil applied right at the cut goes a long way.
Slower than you think. For a 1/2 inch step in mild steel, somewhere in the 400–800 RPM range works well. Stainless steel wants slower still — 200–400 RPM. The faster the bit spins, the more heat builds up at the cutting edge, and heat is what kills step bits. If the chips are turning blue, you are going too fast or pushing too hard.
Nothing — unibit is a trademark that became a generic term. UNIBIT was the original brand from Hougen back in 1973, and the term stuck the same way Kleenex did for tissue. Today, any step drill bit may be called a unibit in shop conversation, though most manufacturers list them as step drill bits or step bits.
Technically yes, practically no. The cutting geometry on a step bit is complex — multiple cutting edges, relief angles, and flute geometry all need to be ground correctly to maintain performance. A few specialized sharpening services can do it, but most operations find it more economical to replace the bit. Cobalt bits are sometimes worth sending out; coated HSS bits almost never are.
