A uniform gap all the way around matters as much as the number itself.
For small-bore work a centering head is convenient but not mandatory — many fitters lay out top-dead-center with a wrap-around and a level. Where centering heads earn their keep is on larger diameters, where finding an accurate centerline by eye is slow and error-prone, and on layout for saddle and lateral connections.
