Pipe Vises: The Grip Behind Every Clean Thread and Square Cut
A pipe vise is the foundation of every good pipe job. Before you can thread, cut, ream, or bevel a length of pipe, you have to hold it — securely, squarely, and without crushing or spinning it. That's exactly what a pipe vise is engineered to do. Round stock is the worst possible shape for a standard bench vise to grip, so pipe vises use V-shaped jaws or wrap-around chains to lock pipe in place through the heavy torque of threading and cutting. What Is a Pipe Vise?
A pipe vise is a workholding fixture purpose-built for round stock. Unlike the flat, parallel jaws of a machinist's vise, a pipe vise contacts the pipe at multiple points around its circumference, so torque from a threader or wrench can't spin the work. There are two core designs:
- Yoke (hinged) vises — a V-shaped lower jaw and a screw-driven upper jaw close on the pipe from above and below. The hinged frame swings open so you can lay pipe in without feeding it through the end. Typical capacity runs 1/8 in. through 6 in. nominal pipe.
- Chain vises — a hardened roller chain wraps over the pipe and pulls it down into a serrated V-base. Chain vises grip irregular shapes and larger diameters — up to 8 in. on many models — with a lower profile and lighter weight than an equivalent yoke vise.
Both styles come as bench-mount units that bolt to a workbench, or built into portable tri-stands — the folding three-legged stands you'll see wherever pipe is threaded in the field. What Is a Pipe Vise Used For?
Any trade that cuts or joins pipe leans on a pipe vise daily:
- Pipe threading — holding pipe against the substantial torque of a hand ratchet or power drive. If you've read our guide to pipe threaders, the vise is the other half of that equation.
- Cutting and reaming — keeping the pipe dead still for wheel cutters, saws, and reamers so cuts stay square.
- Plumbing and mechanical contracting — field fabrication of threaded steel, black iron, and galvanized systems.
- Fire protection — sprinkler contractors threading and grooving branch lines on tri-stands at the point of install.
- Weld shops — holding pipe for fit-up, tacking, and beveling before it moves to the positioner or welding table.
- Maintenance and repair — a bench chain vise in the shop corner handles everything from conduit to hydraulic tube.
How to Choose a Pipe Vise
Four questions narrow the field quickly:

- Shop or field? Bolt a bench vise at the shop's fabrication corner; choose a folding tri-stand for site work. A tri-stand sets up in seconds and gives you a stable work height anywhere on the job.
- What else does the stand need to do? Tri-stands with bender notches, tool trays, and pipe supports save trips back to the gang box. If you're threading with a power drive, make sure the stand is rated to take the reaction torque.
- How rough is the duty cycle? Daily production threading favors a heavier yoke vise with replaceable jaw inserts. Occasional maintenance work is well served by a lighter chain vise. Either way, keep the jaws clean and lightly oiled — and follow OSHA's hand and power tool safety guidance for workholding and guarding fundamentals.
One more tip: pair the vise with proper pipe supports. Long lengths cantilevered out of any vise are a tipping hazard — set a pipe stand under the free end.

Pipe Vise FAQs
A bench vise has flat, parallel jaws designed for flat stock; round pipe contacts those jaws at just two points, so it spins under threading torque and the jaws mar the surface. A pipe vise grips the pipe's circumference with V-jaws or a chain, holding round stock securely without deforming it. Many quality bench vises split the difference by adding small pipe jaws below the main jaws.
Size the vise to the largest pipe you regularly run, not the largest you might ever see. Most mechanical and plumbing contractors are covered by a 1/8 in.–6 in. yoke vise; industrial and fire-protection work with larger mains may justify an 8 in. chain vise. Going oversized costs money and bench space without adding much utility.
Yes — that's the primary job. A pipe vise resists the rotational force of a hand ratchet threader or a power drive so the pipe stays put while the die cuts. For power threading, make sure both the vise and the stand are rated for the machine's torque, and use a support arm or torque arm where the manufacturer requires one.
A tri-stand is a folding three-legged stand with a chain or yoke vise built into the top, giving you a portable pipe workstation that sets up at working height anywhere on site. Most include bending notches and a tool tray. Fold it flat and it rides in the truck bed between jobs.
Not when it's used correctly. Steel pipe tolerates serrated jaws fine; the teeth marks are cosmetic and usually land on a section that gets cut or buried anyway. For finished surfaces, stainless, or thin-wall tube, use jaw covers or a vise with smooth inserts, and tighten only enough to stop rotation — over-cranking thin-wall tube is what causes ovality.
