Midland Tool Saves Lives with National Marrow Donor Program
For the month of April, Midland Tool & Supply has committed to giving $20.20 of the sales from the top six selling Milwaukee power kits to National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), formerly Be The Match. NMDP helps patients diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases find a match to save their life with a bone marrow or cord blood transplant. 70% of patients who need a transplant do not have a fully matched donor in their family and depend on NMDP to find a match. This program provides patients and families with one on one support throughout their journey, connects patients with donors and conducts research to improve donor matching and timely transplants.
Our Why
In December 2019, our President, Brian Boychuk, was diagnosed with adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML). When AML occurs in the body, a patient’s bone marrow will produce mutated stem cells. With fewer healthy blood cells, the body cannot fight infections or stop bleeding. Through NMDP, Brian was matched with a blood stem cell donor to help save his life.
How Does My Donation Help?
A donation to NMDP helps patients receive the care and treatment they need for a second chance at life. Patients with blood cancers often face three barriers that keep them from receiving a life-saving transplant they need.
The first barrier is affording the transplant. Donations help patients pay for transplant costs that aren’t covered by insurance, like the search for a donor, prescription co-pays and even travel or lodging when the transplant center is far from home. The second barrier is finding a matching marrow donor for the transplant. Every $100 raised adds potential marrow donors to the registry and helps more patients afford transplants. The last barrier patients face is the timing of the transplant. Donations help enable NMDP to invest in transplant research, providing better timing of transplants, improving donor to patient matching and better treatments for specific diseases.
